Pyrite - Wikipedia

The mineral pyrite , or iron pyrite, also known as fool's gold, is an iron sulfide with the chemical formula FeS2 (iron(II) disulfide). Pyrite is considered the most common form of sulfide minerals. Pyrite's metallic luster and pale brass-yellow hue give it a superficial resemblance to gold, hence the well-known nickname of fool's gold. The color has also led to the nicknames brass, brazzle, and Brazil, primarily used to refer to pyrite found in coal.

Pyrite - University of Pittsburgh. Once near the surface, oxygenated water attacks pyrite, causing this iron sulfide mineral to break down into various sulfur and iron compounds. The pale yellowish bands on the coal at right are elemental sulfur, the rusty coatings are iron oxides. Pyrite weathering also makes sulfuric acid and relases a ...

Pyrite - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics

The oxidation of pyrite can occur when the mineral surface is exposed to an oxidant and water, either in oxygenated or anoxic systems, depending on the oxidant. The process is complex and can involve chemical, biological, and electrochemical reactions. The chemical oxidation of pyrite can follow a variety of pathways involving surface interactions with dissolved O 2, Fe 3+, and other mineral ...

Pyrite: The mineral pyrite information and pictures

Pyrite was once used as a source of sulfur, but is now only a minor ore for both sulfur and iron. Pyrite from some localities is auriferous, and therefore is used as an ore of gold in gold-bearing localities.Pyrite was polished by the Native Americans in the early times and used as mirrors. Today, it is used as an ornamental stone, as well as a very popular stone for amateur collectors.

Gold Leaching of Pyrite Concentrate. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerals were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was ...

How do pyrite and pyrrhotite damage building …

Pyrite and pyrrhotite are minerals known as iron sulfides. When iron sulfides are exposed to water and oxygen, a series of chemical reactions breaks down the iron sulfides and forms new minerals called sulfates. These sulfates take up more space than the original iron sulfides. As they grow, the new sulfate minerals push against the surrounding rock, causing it to swell and

Acid Mine Drainage - effects, types, plants, marine, oxygen

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is produced by the chemical reaction of sulfide ore and associated minerals with air and water. This reaction (as shown below) illustrates how sulfuric acid (H 2 SO 4 ) and iron sulfate (FeSO 4 ) are produced when the iron sulfide mineral pyrite (FeS 2 ) reacts with water:
